Third Sign
4. Hearing the Unseen Danger
Sometimes, you might not see anything unusual, but you might hear something. Specifically, a loud, roaring sound coming from the ocean. This isn't the gentle crashing of waves; it's a deep, powerful rumble that sounds like a train or jet engine, but much, much louder.
This sound is the tsunami wave approaching, disrupting the water and air. The roar is created as the wave moves closer to the shoreline, compressing air and creating an incredibly loud sound that you can hear from miles away. It could also be the sound of debris, rocks, and other things the wave is carrying along with it.
You might hear this roar even if you don't see the receding water or feel an earthquake. In this case, treat it as a serious threat and immediately move to higher ground. Don't hesitate; trust your ears. In situations like these, your intuition and auditory sense can be the biggest lifesavers.
Think of it this way: if the ocean suddenly starts sounding like it's clearing its throat before singing a really loud and off-key song, it's probably a good time to leave the beach. This rumbling, roaring noise is no joke, and it's your sign to head for higher ground immediately. You don't want to find yourself in the path of that sonic boom!
